Description

Finals which consist of two or three vowels are called compound finals. There are totally 13 compound finals in putonghua. When you pronounce a compound finals, glide smoothly from one vowel to another instead of jumping from one to another. According to the different positions of the main vowels, compound finals can be classified into the following three kinds: qiangxiang compound finals, houxiang compound finals and zhongxiang compound finals. ia ie ua uo ve are houxiang compound finals. Houxiang compound finals with the second component louder and clearer than the first. iao iou uai uei are zhongxiang compound finals. Zhongxiang compound final ( triphthongs) with the mid-component louder and clearer than the rest two. When iou and uei follow initials to from syllables, they wll be written as iu and ui respectively, for example: xiu and shui, with the tone-graph placed over the back vowel. The tone-graph of compound finals should be placed over the main vowel. er is a special final, which cannot be spelled with any other initials but forms a syllable by itself.
