福 Fu - Blessing, Good Fortune, Good Luck

福 (fu) is one of the most popular and lucky Chinese characters used in Chinese New Year. The word 福 (fu), which means good luck and happiness, is written on a square red paper and often displayed upside down (倒 dao) on doors and elsewhere in the hope that the word could bring blessings to their families. The act of turning the word “fortune” upside down is called, dao-fu which literally means, “Good luck is coming/arriving!”（福到了！Fu dao le.） It is not only a play on words, but a play with words.

How is the word “FU” used in everyday conversation? Here are two examples you may use often when you talk with Chinese friends:

你 真 有 福气，老婆 对 你 这么 好！
Nǐ zhēn yǒu fúqi，lǎopó duì nǐ zhème hǎo。
You are really fortunate, your wife is so kind to you.

你 都 发福 了，该 多 运动 运动。
Nǐ dōu fāfú le，gāi duō yùndòng yùndòng。
You have put on weight, you should do more physical exercises.
